The Art Of Self Care

Tags like #SelfCare, #SelfCareSunday and #SelfCareDay, are currently taking the Insta-crowd by storm, as people begin to concentrate more on their own wellbeing.

But what is Self Care?

Put simply, self care encompasses the steps we take to look after our bodies and minds to improve our physical and mental health and wellbeing. With our increasingly busy social lives, demanding family needs and hectic work schedules; it can be pretty easy to forget about your own needs whilst you’re thinking about everyone else's.

Creating new, healthy habits and taking actions to look after yourself has a lot of benefits. First and foremost you can reduce feelings of stress or anxiety, and increase your self esteem. You’ll improve your immune system which means less sick days! You’ll have time to figure out what you love, and what makes you happy and you’ll reconnect with yourself. You’ll also have more to give others - if you’ve hit the point of burning out then you can’t do what’s best for you or anyone else!

A quick search through Pinterest or Instagram will give you literally hundreds of self care activities you can do. Free ones, expensive ones, short ones, ones that take days. These can be split into three main categories (with a tonne of other subcategories within each).

Physical Self Care, Emotional Self Care and Social Self Care

Like i said the list of activities isn’t exhaustive, but I’ve listed some of my faves below. Try some out and see how you feel!

Physical Self Care Activities

  • Have a nap. Seriously! The ideal nap is around 20 minutes. This will leave you refreshed and ready to take on the remainder of the day

  • Go for a walk or a run. This is the easiest form of exercise and 30 minutes of daylight and fresh air will leave you feeling positive.

  • Have a bath. Use that Lush Bath Bomb that cost you a fiver. Light some candles and read your favourite book. Just don’t drop the kindle in the tub.

  • Drink lots of water. If you’re rubbish at that like I am, cut up some fresh fruit and add it in.

Emotional Self Care Activities

  • Keep a diary - and be honest about your feelings.

  • Sing along loudly to your favourite song. Do it in the privacy of your car if you need to.

  • Look back and photos and videos that make you laugh - you know they’re in your Timehop somewhere!

  • Learn something new. Buy that Social Media course you’ve been eyeing up on Groupon or teach yourself some Photoshop techniques from YouTube.

Social Self Care Activities

  • Text or email a friend who you haven’t spoken to in ages but who you miss.

  • Arrange a lunch, dinner or coffee date with close friends. Catch up, giggle, share a dessert.

  • Don’t hang round with those toxic friends who bring you down.

  • Strike up a conversation with someone you find interesting.

You don’t have to do these all at once, just try and make a little time each day to do something that makes you happy!
